Services over and above the call of nature August 1st 2003 The 2003 BTA conference and exhibition was a great success and gave evidence that the BTA has continually moved forwards since its inception four years ago. Cleaning Matters takes a look at what has happened and highlights the innovation awards and its winners
The British Toilet Association now has its first management committee. This will look at how to expand the organisation and build on current success to influence decision making in local authorities and Government. This is supported by a membership that is nearly 200. Having achieved a high level of media awareness, Richard Chisnell, director of the BTA believes that it is now poised for a major break through. We need to manage out anti-social behaviour to increase public confidence, says Richard. Legislation is not essential to ensure toilets are improved, the solution rests with those who care, together we are making a difference.
There were a number of interesting papers given at the conference which will be covered in more detail in later issues. However I will did think that the comment by Pat Molony, BDM, BICSc while she was talking about the case for a BTA Toilet Academy to be particularly perceptive. She said that she had been asked many times by cleaning operatives What if I train people and they left?. Her reply was What if you didnt train them and they stayed?. The fact is that cleaning, and cleaning toilets in particular, needs to be valued as an essential activity. After all none of us like to go to places that are, or appear to be, unhygienic. Ungers survey below shows how people view away-from-home washrooms; and it isnt good.
The BTA runs an annual Innovation Awards scheme, covering all types of away from home toilet. There are currently three categories of award. A maximum of three awards is presented in each category, each year along with a special award, presented to an organisation or individual, for an outstanding contribution made to raising washroom standards over the years.
