2003 Loo of the year awards December 1st 2003 The 2003 Loo of the Year Awards Presentation ceremonies broke all previous records, with over 750 participants and guests attending three Presentation Luncheons at The Highland Conference Centre, Nairn, for Scottish entries, Belfast City Hall, for Northern Ireland entries and the main Presentation at the International Convention Centre in Birmingham, for England and Wales as well as overall National Winners
Visitor toilets at The Eden Project in Cornwall won the 2003 Loo of the Year Awards Trophy. The famous golden loo seat, mounted on a mahogany plinth, was presented to the already world famous visitor attraction and the associated Attendant of the Year Awards Trophy, for toilet cleaning staff, was won by Westminster City Council, together with their cleaning contractor Carlisle Facilities Management. Guest presenters were David Noble, chief executive, Highlands of Scotland Tourist Board, Alan Clarke, chief executive, Northern Ireland Tourist Board and Sin Lloyd, ITVs famous weather girl. BTA Chairman, Sir William Lawrence presided over the Birmingham Presentation.
Promoted by the British Toilet Association, with sponsorship provided by washroom suppliers Cannon Hygiene, SCA Hygiene Products, Technical Concepts and Unger UK, with further support from the four national tourism bodies Visit Britain, Visit Scotland, Wales Tourist Board and Northern Ireland Tourist Board, the Loo of the Year Awards offer an annual opportunity for away from home toilet providers to receive an independent grading assessment for their various toilet facilities.
Over 800 entries were received for the 2003 Awards.
Other major national winners were: England Station Road, Hinckley (public toilets), Applegarth, Northallerton (accessible toilets) and The Trafford Centre, Manchester (babychange facilities); Scotland Ullapool High School (individual entries), Achnasheen (public toilets), Queens Street, Broughty Ferry (accessible toilets) and Quality Street, North Berwick (babychange facilities); Wales Moto Hospitality, M4 Swansea (individual entries), Caer Street, Swansea (public toilets), Cenarth Falls Health and Country Club (accessible toilets) and Cwmbran Shopping Centre (babychange facilities) and Northern Ireland The Old Bushmills Distillery (individual entries), Church Lane, Belfast (public toilets), Marine Park, Annalong (accessible toilets) and McKillens, Ballymena (babychange facilities).
Standards of Excellence Awards were won by ten Champions League Corporate providers, all winning five or more five star Awards, namely: East Lothian Council, J D Wetherspoon, McDonalds Restaurants, Moto Hospitality, Network Rail, The Camping & Caravanning Club, The Highland Council, Welcome Break Group, Westminster City Council and Wychavon District Council
Other major national Attendant of the Year Awards were won by The Highland Council (Scotland), City and County of Swansea (Wales) and Wellington Court, Ballymena (Northern Ireland).
Commenting on the results of this years competition, Awards Director Richard Chisnell, believes Britain is waking up to the need for better away from home toilets. With over 800 entries in the 2003 Awards, across our eighteen entry categories, higher standards really are being set by an increasing number of corporate as well as small business providers. Weve a long way still to go but the good examples evident in this years Awards will help spread the message that Award winning toilets are good for business, as well as for Britains visitor reputation abroad.
