Hunt for attendant of the year
August 1st 2003

The quest for the Ultimate Attendant has been launched, with Cannon Hygiene supporting the search for Britains best washroom workers. Cannon has renewed its sponsorship for the Attendant of the Year, organised by the British Toilet Association, for the eighth year running. John Clark, Cannons marketing director, said Washroom staff are usually blamed when toilets are not up to scratch, and rarely praised when they do a good job, so its vital that those who quietly provide an excellent service are publicly recognised.

Its important the public have the same confidence in their public conveniences as our customers have in Cannon, which supplies many of the services that makes a trip to the toilet pleasant. Weve happily been sole sponsor of the Loo of the Year Awards for seven years. However if the competition is to grow it needs opening out to other backers, which is why were so delighted to have other sponsors on board this year. Last year an Attendant of the Year Award was made to each country within the UK. In England the overall winner was Manchesters Trafford Centre; in Scotland it was the Highland Councils Kyle of Lochalsh; in Northern Ireland top prize went to the facilities Wellington Court in Ballymena; and in Wales it was Ceredigion Councils Park Avenue loos in Aberystwyth. Jasmine Wilson, Ceredigions cleaning services manager and a former cleaner herself, said: Toilet staff are often seen as the lowest of the low, but we should treat them as professionals and build up their self-esteem through awards like these. Weve made the toilets nicer by putting flowers and pot pourris in. But its about more than flowers, its about encouraging staff to give the best service they can, and making them feel recognised for the public work they do.
