Waterless at Clacket Lane
June 1st 2008

The Roadchef Service Station at Clacket Lane on the M25 has switched to waterless urinals from Water Solutions – saving £4,500 in the first year alone, including all installation costs, from water savings and vastly reduced maintenance costs.

The firm points to government research that shows limescale deposited from tap water naturally absorbs urine, forming a breeding ground for bacteria. By stopping the limescale, (ie the water) the bacteria, and therefore odour problem, is eliminated.

Water Solutions says its product is simple. A small unit is fitted into the outlet in the urinal bowl and contains a one-way silicone valve that allows liquid to pass through, then seals when flow is complete. The unit has a domed head that when activated by urine releases a faint citrus smell.

The firm says cisterns and connecting pipework are therefore redundant, as are the days of urinal blockages.
