Here Comes Summer
June 1st 2007

The Summer has started off slowly and now business has all come at once. But not in the guise we would all expect, normally sun streaming in the windows encourages lots of people to start cleaning up their carpets and businesses. This year seems to have brought nothing but problems, with major flooding, carpet beetles and carpet moths. So unfortunately we need to address these problems of flood and pestilence for this problem solver.

Carpet Moths and Carpet Beetles interestingly the carpet moth is a protected species and does not eat fabrics. However the old fashioned Clothes Moth is actually the culprit, they feed on cotton, linen, woollens, furs and silk. They can also damage some synthetic fabrics and paper substances while they are feeding on food, drinks and perspiration which may have got onto these surfaces.Wool carpets are especially susceptible to these moths.

The larvae of the moth is the culprit, the buff coloured adults do not eat fabrics.Deal with these by vacuuming and disposing thoroughly of the vacuum contents, there will be cast off skins and pupal cases visible in the fibres.Treating with an antimicrobial such as Microban or Ultra Fresh on the front and back of the carpet will kill the larvae. Then rinse out with a hot water detergent which is safe for the carpet. Small items infected such as toys or stuffed items can be bagged and put into a freezer for a week to destroy the contamination.

Floods Large or small there are complex procedures to follow but for large floods especially with contaminated water, it is always best to call in a restoration expert,we do run training in this area for companies wanting to become more specialised.

Small areas of flooding remove water, spray down Microban or Ultrafresh, clean the area with Formula 90 Liquid, treat again and thoroughly dry. Ensure you are wearing full PPE to protect yourself and ensure that no one without this protection is allowed access until the area is safe
