Britain’s got litter – search begins
June 1st 2009

Keep Britain Tidy is looking for a celebrity ambassador to help give England a face-lift.

In an unusual step, the anti-litter charity has taken out a job advert in the national press as it searches for an iconic figure to champion its cause.

The successful candidate would be following in the footsteps of the Queen Mother,Abba,Marc Bolan, and comedy legends Morecambe and Wise.

Formed in 1954, and regarded as one of the world’s first eco-brands, Keep Britain Tidy has long used stars of stage and screen to promote its work.

Keep Britain Tidy has had successes in recent years like reducing dog dirt and fly-posting. But the fact remains that 2.2m bits of litter still get dropped every day – and it costs the taxpayer more than £600m to clean-up.

The charity is entering a new era in the war on litter and wants someone fab, famous and inspirational to lead the fight.

It is anticipated that the ambassador role would last for up to three years. The successful candidate would need to give up two days of his or her time for free and act as the face of England’s anti-litter movement.

In return the star would be forever linked with Keep Britain Tidy’s efforts to make our country a better place to live.

“We are searching for a celebrity that hates litter and wants to roll up their sleeves and get stuck in,” says Phil Barton, chief executive of Keep Britain Tidy.

“They need to be able to inspire others and use their celebrity status to influence and educate everyone who litters.

“We are used to hearing famous people make comments championing the anti litter cause but this is really their opportunity to put their money where their mouth is.“ CVs should be emailed to: celebrity@keepbritaintidy.org Prospective candidates must: Hate litter, have a passion for cleaner, greener places, be willing to give two days a year for free, be able to inspire others, be famous not infamous.

CM‘s suggestions include:

• Ted Rogers of 3-2-1 Dusty Bin fame – unfortunately this would have to be a posthumous appearance – but after all Bob Monkhouse is doing prostate cancer ads on the London Underground from beyond the grave

• Shirley Manson from the band Garbage

• Rab C Nesbitt

• Roland Rat
