Raise your glasses to ride-on
October 1st 2006

One of Nilfisk-ALTO's most versatile ride-on scrubber-dryers has a vital role in an ultramodern glass factory where it is keeping floors sparkling clean, safe and hygienic

The Nilfisk-ALTO R34 handles routine floor cleaning around the bottle production lines – and the nearby filling hall – at the Elton, Cheshire, plant of Quinn Glass. It is also on call in case of any liquid spills. The R34, supplied through Nilfisk-ALTO dealer TDC Services, was selected for its ability to cope efficiently and economically with large areas – as well as its high manoeuvrability in tight spaces.

The battery powered R34 has two 430mm brushes, giving an 860mm cleaning width. The 1,070mm squeegee ensures there is no residual moisture, so that floors are safe to use immediately the machine has passed.Operating at 4km/h the R34 cleans more than 4,800m2/h and its large 170 litre solution and recovery tanks permit extended runs between servicing stops. The 1,819x916mm footprint enables the R34 to perform in narrow aisles, while the well designed driving position gives the operator an excellent view, facilitating manoeuvres around obstacles. The R34 was acquired for the Quinn Group's second glass plant, newly established in Cheshire. John Aitken, Operations Manager, says:"We needed a reliable, easy to use machine to deliver high standards of cleanliness. The R34 meets all our needs in a cost-effective package."

Over the past 30 years the Quinn Group has grown into one of Ireland's top companies, with interests in diverse industries.Quinn Glass began operations in 1998 and its £100 million plant in Northern Ireland supplies more than 750 million glass containers each year to the food and beverage sector in the UK and Ireland. The new Elton plant covers 70,000m2 and can produce up to four million containers a day or 1.2 billion a year. It has 13 glass production lines, making a wide range of jars and bottles.Uniquely, it also provides a one-stop glass packaging and filling service for the drinks industry with five filling lines and a capacity of 600 million units a year. The adjoining automated warehouse is designed for 281,300 pallets a year.

In addition to the R34,TDC Services provided operator training, to enable Quinn Glass to get immediate full value from the new machine.Glass manufacture is just one of many industries on the doorstep of Deeside-based TDC Services, which has been providing floorcare and pressure washer solutions in and around North Cheshire for the past 21 years and is a long-standing Nilfisk-ALTO dealer. Jonathan Catherall, a partner in the family run company, says customers include many blue chip companies, among them leading names in chemicals and petrochemicals.TDC provides customer support through its team of five engineers.
