When flooding gets really bad...
October 1st 2006

Contractors gutting a former department store in the centre of Leeds recently had to call in emergency drain specialists Dyno-Rod, for urgent assistance.

On examination of two further storeys below ground level, a major problem emerged; this area had been dug out some 100 years ago and included a 2 metre wide by 120metre long passageway, which had been designed as a heat shaft. This was completely flooded and the contractors initially thought it was an underground canal.

Edgetime, the local Dyno-Rod representatives who were called in, identified the cause of the flooding to be the ingress of rainwater. Using CCTV equipment to assess the scale of the problem, gas detectors, breathing apparatus, extra emergency lighting and winches, Edgetime were able to pump out all the water in just two days. The contractor was then able to complete the demolition of the inside of the store to make way for a new shopping centre.

Edgetime commented: "Although we had never used our CCTV equipment in a tunnel this long before, with our expertise and equipment we were still able to complete the job with minimum disruption and delay."
